A few weeks ago I went roller skating with my family along the sea front with my family.
Blue sky. Sun glinting off the sea. Salt air whipping my hair in front of my face.
I love it!
And roller skating too.
As we were putting on our skates, there was a girl of about 12 with her family who had clearly never roller skated before.
Her dad was with her.
She put on the skates, clearly scared about the new activity.
"I can't do it! I can't do it!" she cried.
She wobbled and had to lean on her dad for help.
"I can't do it! I can't do it!" she continued.
"Well put your shoes back on then!" said her dad.
And that was the end of her roller skating for that day.
I skated to the end of the promenade and back with my 7 year old son.
He must have fallen over 30 times. (Luckily we wear all the knee and elbow protectors!)
What did he do after he fell over?
Did he take his skates off and walk back to the car?
No. He got up and he started again.
And again.
And again.
What's more, he laughed as he did it and we had fun.
We passed the other family as they walked all the way to the end of the promenade and back.
I hope they had a good time. You don't have to roller skate to have fun.
If your objective is to learn to roller skate and you end up taking off your skates the moment you wobble, you aren't going to be doing much skating.
THAT is the difference a POSITIVE MINDSET and a NOT COMMITTED MINDSET.
Make it to the end of the promenade skating (and falling over lots). Or walk.
Next time I expect my son will do it falling over only 15 times.
Then 10.
Then 5.
Until he can skate without falling over (like his big brother.)
